Somerville Manning Gallery has exhibited the works of three accomplished artists (Michael Doyle, Francis Gregory Di Fronzo, and Christine Lafuente) for many years. They all studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and each has developed their own expression in their paintings as seen in Earth Sea and Sky.

This intensive 4-week class offers painters of all levels a full introduction to oil painting materials and techniques, including color palette range and control, as well as drawing concepts as relevant to painting from observation. Each day will include a morning of demonstration and color exercises, followed by an afternoon of still life or figure painting that will draw on the morning’s lesson. Bring a bag lunch to enjoy during the break.

Color Harmony in Tonal Painting, Part II  (previous oil painting experience required)

This intensive 4-week class builds on oil painting materials and techniques covered in Part I, including color mixing control, the benefits of various solvents and mediums, and expanded approaches to color harmony such as the use of toned grounds and indirect painting techniques. Each day will include a morning of lecture, demonstration and laboratory, followed by an afternoon of still life or figure painting that will draw on the morning’s lesson. This workshop will focus on oil painting techniques in working directly from observation in the Maine landscape.

The following concepts will be covered:

  1. Approaches to composition in drawing and painting from observation such as gesture, tonal design, proportion, and atmospheric color harmony.
  2. Materials and techniques in oil painting such as grounds, pigments, solvents, palette organization, and color mixing.
  3. Landscape painting as a practice and as a source for other work.
